Home Maintenance Monday 3/31/25: Check Your Deck and Fencing for Winter Damage
With spring in the air, it's hard NOT to step outside every time the sky clears and the air warms! If you're looking for a reason to step outside later on this week when the sun is out again, you should think about inspecting any decks or fencing around your home for winter damage. Winter can be tough on outdoor structures; with the prolonged moisture and fluctuating temperatures, your deck or fence may have taken a hit without you even realizing it. Performing a quick inspection now can save you from bigger repairs down the road and help ensure your outdoor spaces are safe and ready for spring and summer entertaining.
Here are a few key things to look out for when inspecting your deck and fencing for winter damage:
1. Check for Loose or Warped Boards
Cold and wet winter weather can cause the wood on your deck or fence to warp or loosen. Walk around and gently press on each board. If any boards move or seem unstable, it’s a sign they might have loosened during freezing and thawing cycles. If you notice warped boards, consider replacing or repairing them to prevent future damage.
2. Check for Surface Damage
Look for for Cracks or Splits; wood can also crack under the pressure of winter moisture. If you spot any visible cracks or splits in your deck boards or fence posts, it’s important to address them sooner rather than later. Cracks can expand during the warmer months and lead to even more significant damage. Use wood filler to seal small cracks, and replace larger, more severe ones to keep your structure stable. To check your deck for insect activity, thoroughly check over the posts, beams, joists, and deck boards for signs of damage like holes, tunnels, or any sawdust-like residue which could be an indicator for the presence of burrowing insects like carpenter ants or termites. If any burrowing insects have found their way into the woods of your home, it is better to spot them and remove them before they cause structural damage.
3. Look for Rusted or Loose Fasteners
Snow and ice can accelerate rusting on screws, nails, and other fasteners that hold your deck or fence together. Look for any signs of corrosion or rust, especially on the hardware around gates, railings, and supports. If the screws or nails appear loose, tighten them up to keep everything securely in place.
4. Examine the Foundation
Both decks and fences rely on a stable foundation to stay level and upright. After the winter months, it’s a good idea to check the footings of your deck posts or fence supports. Frozen ground or shifting soil may have caused some posts to lean or shift. Ensure that everything is standing upright and stable. If a post seems loose, you may need to dig around it and adjust the footing.
5. Look for Mold or Mildew
Prolonged periods of moisture with pooling that lingers on your deck or fence for a long time, can create the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Look for any signs of dark spots or a musty smell, especially in shaded areas. If you spot mold, clean the area with a mixture of water and vinegar or a specially formulated outdoor cleaner, and allow it to dry thoroughly.
6. Power Wash for a Fresh Look
Once you've addressed any damage, this can be a great time to give your deck or fence a good power wash to remove any dirt, grime, or winter buildup. A clean surface will help you assess any remaining issues more clearly and prepare your deck or fence for spring staining or sealing. Just be sure to use a gentle setting if you’re washing wood to avoid causing further damage.
7. Re-stain or Seal to Protect Against Future Damage
If your deck or fence is looking a bit worn, consider applying a new coat of stain or sealant. This protective layer can help prevent damage from UV rays, moisture, and other elements. Spring is the perfect time to refresh your outdoor wood structures so they’re ready for the season ahead.
Taking a little time this week to inspect your deck and fence for any winter damage will not only ensure they’re safe but will also enhance the look of your outdoor spaces. Whether it’s a simple repair or a full re-staining, you’ll be ready to enjoy your deck or fence all season long. And don’t forget, your home’s curb appeal matters too—taking care of your outdoor structures can add value and make a lasting impression on anyone who visits!
